Personalizing Psychotherapy: Assessing & Accommodating Patient Preferences

Patient preferences are an essential element of effective psychotherapy and evidence-based practice. But what are the specific, demonstrably effective ways in which clinicians can appraise and honor those preferences in session? This workshop will briefly review the meta-analytic research evidence in this area and then focus on skill development. We practice several methods of rapidly assessing strong preferences (including the Cooper-Norcross Inventory of Preferences, C-NIP), present ways of seamlessly incorporating such preferences into treatment, and discuss the potential contraindications of doing so.
